I have been looking for a *long* time for a program like IdeaMason. The key characteristic of your product is that it relies on organising text in a database, instead of using more or less formatted/marked-up text files. Having a database as a back end is not only useful for searches but it also enables you to fragment your text and other materials as much as you want and then recompose it arbitrarily and productively. This is what you have achieved with IdeaMason! I can appreciate this powerful mechanism because of the way I work (not different to most researchers), by accumulating notes, fragments, quotations, etc over a long time. IdeaMason enables you to build compositions without losing those accumulated materials, and thereby facilitates material reuse and good organisation. I think this solution is ideal for researchers.

In a nutshell IdeaMason provides something virtually no other writing tool does in my experience, in its synthesis of a repository and an outliner. Most fiction writing tools focus on the outliner and composition elements. But the repository in those programmes is often rudimentary, whilst at the same time the outliner is made unnecessarily complex by enforcing particular composition frameworks and rules. Nowadays most fiction writers don’t need such rules, but we do value somewhere to put all those ideas, notes, bits of research, chapters, scenes and so on.

I am the type of writer who writes in a stream of consciousness. But this style of writing means that I spend hours on the back end editing and drilling down. What I like about IdeaMason is that I still feel like I can write in a stream, only it helps me see natural breaks in my thinking and encourages me to create new ideas and link them instead of continue on in one long document.
